Week of 30 January 1956

Wednesday, 1 February
47 Hamilton Terrace - Elmhurst Farm
Caught the 3.18 to Horsham where Reg met me. Travelled first class with an elderly military gent - Bunny? who knew Oswald and Pippa - and Will by name as he had been in the First World War. 15 degrees of frost here but Reg has done wonders with the house, though I am glad to have my fleece-lined boots.
Friday, 3 February
Elmhurst Farm
Still bitterly cold but perhaps not quite so cold as yesterday. Pipe from washing basin in bathroom still frozen. Most interesting letter from Pippa.
Saturday, 4 February
A gloriously sunny morning though still 11 degrees of frost, but the thaw began in the afternoon. We lunched at the Tatler in Horsham - very nice.
Sunday, 5 February
Elmhurst Farm - 47 Hamilton Terrace
A complete thaw and turned into a glorious sunny morning. Reg drove me to Horsham to catch the 4.40 to Victoria. Got home at 6 o'clock and found the house dry and warm but of course no hot water as it had been switched off at the mains. Much family telephoning.
