Week of 12 February 1945

Monday, 12 February

1 Pelham Place

Felt more tired than ever. Did a little bit of shopping in the morning, and got theatre tickets for Anne and Wilma, and Patience and Wilma. Lunched here. Mabel lunched with Kathleen. I rested on the sofa during the afternoon.

In the evening went across to see Eve and have a drink.

The Three Power Conference has finished and a long communiqué has been published. It all seems very satisfactory.

Wilma rang up from Wenham to say she was not coming up till Wednesday.

Tuesday, 13 February

Wet day but turned into a fine evening. Pippa came up to town and we lunched at Jane Brown together and afterwards I went with her while we shopped. Lil came to tea and afterwards I went in to see Eve who gave me a drink.

Grattan left this morning. Anne and Sarah saw him off at Victoria. Poor Anne sounded very low when I rang her up this evening.

Wednesday, 14 February

A lovely day. Wilma came back from Wenham this morning. We lunched together at Jane Brown and then she and I went to see the film of Mrs Parkington. She came back to tea with Enid and Eve over the way, and met Anne and Sarah there, and they went back to Hampstead together.

Anne had a ring up from Grattan who has not left the country yet.

Thursday, 15 February

1 Pelham Place - 179 West Heath Road

Went out to Hampstead for an early tea and then looked after Sarah whilst Anne went to meet Wilma at Wyndham's Theatre to see Clive Brook in the The Life of Idleness.

Friday

179 West Heath Road

Wilma and I bussed into town in the morning - - she to get her corns cut and I to interview Gabbitas Thring about schools for Joan. We joined up afterwards and lunched at the Brasserie Universelle, and then came back here together.

Patience turned up for a late tea, and then she and Wilma went off to the Haymarket Theatre to see The Circle. Afterwards Patience's husband and another man joined them and they had dinner at the Jardin des Gourmets in Greek St.

Saturday, 17 February

179 West Heath Road

Fine day. I went out for a little in the morning, but not again. Felt very tired. Wilma lunched with Roddy at the RAC, and had tea with the Norburys in Harley St. We all three had a very pleasant evening together, and Anne cooked us a delicious supper, but she is seedy with a sore throat.

Sunday, 18 February

179 West Heath Road - 1 Pelham Place

A very sapping springlike day. Wilma and I went over to see Patience and family. I met her husband and Timmy for the first time. We walked back and managed to lose ourselves. After lunch we all departed.
