Bet slept here

Bet arrived just about noon just to leave her luggage before going on to lunch with Roddy. She came back for a late tea.

A terrible shock to hear of the King's death this morning. Princess Elizabeth is flying home immediately from Kenya.

Bet slept here

Bet went off before lunch to inspect a Catholic school (the Crusaders), near Bordon. She got back about 7 o'clock. In the evening we heard via Hester that peter had got pneumonia. Bet rang up Troughend and heard that all was going well. Princess Elizabeth, the new queen, arrived home.

Bet slept here

Bet went to St James' Palace to hear the Accession Proclamation, and then on to lunch with Kemball Johnson. Later, I met her at Warner's cinema to see The African Queen. A very good picture.

I got a good reference of Clara Weekes today and have engaged her to succeed Dora. We rang up Troughend and had a reassuring report of Peter. A doctor had been and found him better.
